LONDON – Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aereas expressed interest in boosting its international network as a way to mitigate the weakening of the Brazilian currency.
By increasing international flights, GOL would decrease the percentage of revenues collected in Brazilian reais.
CEO Paulo Kakinoff told local media that the international portfolio of the carrier is to grow by 40% in 2019 alone, while domestic operations would only have a 3% increase.
The new Boeing 737 MAX 8s that GOL has started to receive consumes 15% less fuel than the current fleet the airline has.
Kakinoff also added that at least one new international destination will be launched every quarter until 2021.
The airline’s CEO concluded that by the end of this week, GOL will receive its third 737 MAX 8 and that 70-80% of the plane’s flights will be international.
It is unclear what sort of routes Kakinoff wants to go for, but it is likely that they will be different places compared to the carrier’s competitors down the line.
